Roc Tan's Windsock Measurements
Get the Right Fit, Every Time
Choosing the correct windsock size is critical to ensuring accurate wind indication, proper visibility, and safe, long-term performance. Roc Tan windsocks are manufactured to precise dimensions, designed to fit our matched hoop and pole systems, and compatible with industry standards like TP312 and FAA AC 150/5345-27.
This guide helps you understand how Roc Tan windsocks are measured, and how to choose the right diameter and length for your application.

How Roc Tan Windsocks Are Measured
Roc Tan windsocks use two primary dimensions:
- Mouth Diameter (also called throat diameter)
- Sock Length (from throat to tail end)
All dimensions are in inches, and measurements refer to the flat-cut size of the fabric before assembly and stitching.
Sample Measurement Chart
Model Code | Mouth Diameter | Sock Length | Compatible Hoop Size | Typical Application |
---|---|---|---|---|
5x18 | 5” | 18” | 5” Open Ring Hoop | Compact site or golf flagpole |
8x24 | 8” | 24” | 8” Hoop w/ integrated preload | Small industrial / golf use |
12x36 | 12” | 36” | 12” Hoop w/ preload | General industrial |
18x60 | 18” | 60” | 18” Hoop or Swivel Unit | Airfields, towers, oil sites |
24x96 | 24” | 96” | Swivel Unit (24”) | Registered airports |
36x144 | 36” | 144” | Swivel Unit (36”) | FAA / TP312-compliant airfields |
⚠️ Windsock size should always be selected based on both visibility needs and mounting strength.
Choosing the Right Windsock Size
✅ Consider:
- Visibility Distance: Longer socks are more visible at a distance.
- Wind Sensitivity: Smaller socks respond faster in low wind, but are less visible.
- Pole / Mount Strength: Larger socks exert more drag and require stronger mounting.
- Compliance: Some installations must meet specific dimensions under regulatory codes.
Aviation & Regulatory Sizes
Spec | Required Sock Dimensions | Compliance Use |
---|---|---|
FAA Size 1 | 18” diameter × 96” length | FAA AC 150/5345-27 airfields (Size 1) |
FAA Size 2 | 36” diameter × 144” length | FAA airfields with high visibility req. |
TP312 (Canada) | 18” or 36” diameters, 96”–144” long | Registered/licensed airstrips & heliports |
Custom (Helipad) | 12” or 18” short-length socks | Rooftop pads, mobile response zones |
Roc Tan provides all FAA- and TP312-compliant socks in standard and striped colour options.
Hoop and Sock Pairing
Roc Tan windsocks are designed to be installed on matched hoop sizes using UV-inhibited nylon ties and grommeted mounting points.
Sock Mouth | Recommended Hoop Diameter | Preload Style |
---|---|---|
5” | 5” Open Ring Hoop | Thread-on or tie mount |
8” | 8” Hoop | Integrated preload |
12” | 12” Hoop | Removable preload assembly |
18” | 18” Hoop / Swivel Unit | Removable preload assembly |
24” | 24” Swivel Unit | Hoop + preload support rod |
36” | 36” Swivel Unit | Hoop + preload support rod |
Custom Sock Measurements
Roc Tan supports custom sock configurations including:
- Custom mouth-to-tail taper ratios
- Oversized or compact length socks
- Adjusted tail openings to reduce drag or improve wind response
- Custom grommet spacing or mounting hardware for non-standard hoops
We recommend discussing custom socks directly with our team to ensure proper mounting and wind flow characteristics.
Quick Tips for Measuring
- Always measure mouth diameter flat across the opening.
- Sock length is measured along the centerline from the hoop end to the tail seam.
- Ensure sock is laid flat and tensioned when measuring existing installations.
- Double-check hoop diameter before ordering replacements.
