Roc Tan's Windsock Installation Instructions
Set Up for Success
Proper installation is key to ensuring your Roc Tan windsock delivers accurate wind indication, long service life, and safe operation in all weather conditions. Whether you’re mounting a standard sock on a small hoop, or deploying a 36” swivel system on a tower, the instructions below will help guide your setup.
Let’s walk through the process for all common Roc Tan windsock systems.
What You’ll Need
Most Roc Tan windsock kits include:
✅ Windsock (grommeted)
✅ UV-resistant nylon ties
✅ Hoop or swivel unit
✅ Preload rod and support (for larger hoops)
✅ Mounting hardware (for applicable models)
You’ll need:
- Gloves
- Ladder or access to base of tower/pole
- Screwdriver or wrench (for preload fasteners)
- Level (optional, for permanent installations)
1. Attaching the Windsock to the Hoop
| Sock Size | Attachment Type | Instructions |
|---|---|---|
| 5” | Open Hoop + Thread-on Windsock | Find the end of the open hoop. Thread the hoop through the windsock.Slide over open ring, or tie each grommet to hoop using supplied ties |
| 8” | Hoop with Preload + Grommeted Windsock | Slip windsock over hoop ensuring the reinforced pad is at the top and sits on the hoop preload. Secure sock with supplied ties. |
| 12” / 18” | Hoop + Preload + Grommeted Windsock | Thread on preload rod. Ensure the preload tail curves down for a smooth contact with the reinforced pad. Slip on sock ensuring reinforced pad is at the top and sit on the preload. Secure sock with supplied ties. |
| 24” / 36” | Swivel Unit + Preload Rod + Support Rod, Grommeted Windsock | Thread on preload rod and support rod. Slip on sock ensuring reinforced pad is at the top and sit on the preload. Secure sock with supplied ties. |
Ensure the reinforced pad on the sock is facing upward (on top of the hoop) to reduce wear.
2. Mounting the Hoop or Swivel Unit
For Hoops on Bases:
- Slide base over 1” pipe (12” or longer)
- Secure hoop using push nut (5”/8”) or screws (12”/18”)
- Confirm rotation by spinning hoop by hand
For Swivel Units:
- Screw ½” MNPT threaded swivel unit onto the top of your steel or aluminum pole
- Ensure the UHMW bushing is aligned and seated fully
- Tighten locking nuts or set screws if included
3. Installing the Pole or Tower
Please contact us for installation instructions for aluminum poles and windsock towers.
Always maintain clearance from power lines and confirm base is stable before attaching windsock.
4. (Optional) Wiring a Sock Light
If using a swivel unit with light:
- Route 120VAC feed to base of pole or tower
- Connect wiring using waterproof conduit body and supplied terminals
- Confirm ground connection is secure
- Test light before final weatherproofing
🛠️ Installation should be performed by a certified electrician in accordance with local electrical code.
5. Final Checks
✅ Sock is mounted with reinforced pad at the top against the preload
✅ Grommets tied securely and evenly spaced
✅ Hoop or swivel spins freely and preload tension is correct
✅ Pole is plumb and secured
✅ No obstructions within the sock’s 360° rotation path
✅ Lights (if included) are functional
Maintenance Reminders
- Inspect sock quarterly for wear, UV damage, or fraying
- Check hoop or swivel hardware annually
- Retighten preload supports or push nuts if needed
- Replace UV ties annually for maximum hold strength
- Re-lamp or test lighting fixtures regularly if installed
